About Riverrnova

Why we started writing about money differently

Riverrnova exists because most finance content in Kenya is either too vague to act on, or too sales-driven to trust.

What Riverrnova is, plainly stated

Riverrnova is an independent finance blog based in Thika, Kenya. We publish analysis of Kenyan capital markets — primarily the Nairobi Securities Exchange, Treasury instruments, and retail investment products like unit trusts and savings accounts — alongside plain-English guides designed to make financial concepts accessible without simplifying them to uselessness. We serve Kenyan earners and investors: salaried professionals managing PAYE deductions and provident fund contributions, small business owners tracking working capital against a shilling that has moved sharply in recent years, and first-time investors trying to understand whether the NSE is right for them before they commit any money. Our geographic focus is Kenya first — we reference local tax treatment, local CMA regulations, and local market data. When we draw on international examples, we say so explicitly and explain why the comparison holds or where it breaks down. Since launching in 2021, Riverrnova has published over 90 articles and two structured short courses, and the newsletter now reaches more than 2,400 subscribers across 14 Kenyan counties.

How we work — and what we don't do

Every article on Riverrnova is built from a primary source: a CBK auction result, an NSE issuer filing, a CMA regulatory notice, or a fund fact sheet. We do not aggregate secondary summaries and present them as analysis. Where we make a projection or offer an interpretation, we label it clearly — “our read” or “one plausible scenario” — so you're never left guessing whether you're reading data or opinion. We are a small team: two full-time editors and one data analyst based in Thika, with occasional contributions from guest writers who are identified by name and disclosed affiliation. We do not accept sponsored content, affiliate commissions on financial product links, or paid placement of any kind. That constraint limits our revenue and our reach, and we accept that trade-off deliberately. What we do not do: we do not give personalised investment advice. If you're looking for someone to tell you specifically which shares to buy or whether a particular insurance policy suits your situation, you need a licensed financial advisor registered with the CMA — and we can point you toward the public register. Our role is to make sure that by the time you sit down with that advisor, you're not walking in without context.

“I've followed finance blogs for years and most of them eventually started pushing products. Riverrnova still hasn't — three years in, it's the same honest, sourced writing it was on day one. That consistency is rare and I trust it more for it.”
